Nicholas Negroponte predictions in 1984

Just watch this talk by Nicholas Negroponte and be amazed as most of his predictions (regarding CD-ROMs, web interfaces, service kiosks and touchscreen interfaces) in 1984 were absolutely accurate:

Now you don't have to get out of bed to go to work

It is a fact that getting out of bed to go to work it's always difficult, but there seems to be some guys that take this a little bit too seriously.

They created the EasyChair Workstation that allows you to work on your computer comfortably whether it's a nice sofa or your own bed. Since I mostly work from home, I would like to see how these "technologies" will evolve to create the perfect work environment (at home) :-)

Ladies and Gentlemen: all the gaming consoles' laptop versions

I was already amazed when some guy decided to create a laptop version of the XBox 360. But this guy went all the way with laptop versions of all the gaming consoles:

I'm speechless, except to say: WOW!

Stuff's predictions for 2008

Engadget posted on the new gadget from Sony Ericsson that is supposed to run PSP games. They did this based on a scan from the Portuguese version of the Stuff magazine. What they didn't know was that this was a part of a "predictions" article for the new year from Stuff (on the January 2008 issue). Which basically means that the gadgets presented on the article are not real. Instead these are merely wild guests from Stuff's editors based on the evolution of gadget's market. They even used the expression "probability of existence" to denote the probability of these gadgets ever seeing the light of day.

So, being a Stuff subscriber, I decided to read the article again and present here some of those interesting gadgets that Stuff thinks will come up on 2008 (the given percentage is the probability of existence):

  • Asus EcoBook - a wood-based (bambu) laptop from Asus (95%)
  • iPhone 3G - the 3G version of the Apple touch phone (60%)
  • Sony Play TV - Tivo-like service for the PS3 (87%)
  • Multi-mouse Apple - mighty mouse with multi-touch technology (62%)
  • Casio Hi-Speed - a digital camera capable of capturing 60 (6 Megapixel) pictures per second (84%)
  • GPS 3D - GPS devices with 3D satellite/airplane photo maps (100% - a Portuguese company already released a product with this technology)
  • Your music follows you - a small robot that follows you around the house playing your music (which is accessed from your PC through WiFi) (89%)
  • GPS cameras - digital cameras equipped with a GPS sensor to help geo-tag your photos (66%)
  • Apple Macbook Nano - A (iPhone-like) multi-touch tablet MacBook with a Blu-Ray recorder (64%)
And for more, check out Stuff magazine :-)

Handy laptop bags

In a time where the oil reaches historic values, everything that we can do to help reduce the consumption of energy is appreciated. And solar-powered devices can be part of the solution.

Until now, the manufacturers of this kind of technology weren't able to produce anything more powerful than a purse that can charge small devices like cellphones. But the technology is advancing and you can now charge your laptop by using this solar-powered laptop bag.

But what's the point of having to go outside to charge a laptop if you don't have Internet access? Well, with the amount of WiFi hotspots now available (some of them in open sunny spaces) you may be able to find some free Internet access out there. You just have to know where to look for.

And what better way to do it than with a handy laptop bag (or a WiFi detecting t-shirt) that detects surrounding WiFi signals without having to take your laptop out of the bag?

Pretty handy, hum?

Pico Projector Display: a projector for your mobile needs

The projector/cellphone concept has been around for sometime now, but Microvision, a company working on technologies to enable better viewing experiences for mobile device, will now present a real new mobile accessory at CES 2008 that will probably revolutionize the way we share/present content.

PicoP is an ultra miniature projection module capable of producing full color, high-resolution images but small enough and low power enough to be embedded directly into an accessory pico projector that connects to mobile devices.

The projected content is delivered to the accessory projector from common video out connections on cell phones, personal media players, laptops, digital cameras and other mobile devices.

CES 2008: the future gadgets

And for the look of it, 2008 will be an interesting, if not revolutionary, year for the world of technology. Check out some of the news and gadgets that are available at the technology fair:

Another approach for "clipping" your iPod Shuffle

Don't like to clip your iPod Shuffle on your clothing? No worries, check out these new headphones that take advantage of the Shuffle's minimal size and allow you to dock it directly into the left headphone.

While it may be in fact handy, some issues have to be considered:

  • even though the shuffle is actually quite light, won't the extra weight on the left side cause the left earphone to slide down a little?
  • how easy is to change between tunes if you can't actually see the iPod shuffle controls?
Maybe we should wait for the first reviews on this to check out if it's really worth the $50 base price.

Good-looking USB gadgets

Yes, I've asked this before: what's more to come in the world of USB? Well, it looks like the surprises will never seize.

Check out these new USB gadgets: that rice-tomato thingy is the hub while the other courses pack 1GB of flash memory.

It makes you wonder: why would you even want a burger-shaped (or fried shrimp-like) USB flash "stick"? I don't know, but my appetite is rising for a mid-morning snack.

I'll be right back! :-)

Take you mail, calendar, internet, games, anti-virus, and much more in your pocket

This is the future of portability: the Portable Apps Suite.

On their own words: "Portable Apps Suite is a collection of portable apps including a web browser, email client, web editor, office suite, word processor, calendar/scheduler, instant messaging client and FTP client, all preconfigured to work portably and be easy to back up. Just drop it on your portable device and you're ready to go."

So, all of this in your USB stick or MP3 Player...easy and simple :-)
