Rotate screen display in Windows Vista

Hello, if you liked this post, please consider subscribing my RSS news feed. Thanks.

Update on this blog: read here.

"OMG! My screen just rotated!" - this was the message I received from my wife through MSN. She was working on the computer at work and all of the sudden, a certain combination of keystrokes made her screen display rotate 90 degrees to the left, which basically meant that she was entering the text on MSN with her head tilted all the way to the left too.

I never used Windows Vista before, but a quick Google search allowed me to discover the correct shortcut that you can use to turn your computer display back to normal: the shortcut Ctrl + Alt + Arrow key shortcut rotates the display in 90 degree increments.

Just thought this could be useful to other Windows Vista users out there that will freak out if their displays flip upside down :-)

isso não tem a ver com o Windows vista, mas sim com o software/driver da placa de video. As gráfica da INTEL normalmente tem isso

Luís Miguel Silva said...

THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!!
You're a lifesaver!!!

Another grateful Thank You! I'm a software developer and am amazed that Microsoft would add a shortcut that was one key away from the common "next page" and "last page" browser shortcut keys. At the very least Vista should pop-up a "did you mean to do this" dialog the first time to explain what happened (like they do if you accidentally type the disabled access keystroke). Sheesh!

It's amazing that this is not documented anywhere in the help.

Thank you so much for this. My screen was UPSIDE DOWN?!?!? It's a wonder how I found this blog standing on my head at work. ;)

Thanks again for the tip.

This is also valid for Win XP and maybe for other windows versions.

Thanks Hadrian. That's good to know :-)

My toddler just flipped my screen--thanks for saving me!

Anonymous said...

Is it possible to disable this? Seriously... I have a program where I end up using those keys a lot, and the system keeps rotating my screen on me.

António Lopes said...

Sorry mate, don't know! But you ought to look at the control panel for some options related to the display. I don't use Windows so I really don't know if there's some option for that or not.

Funny how some folks from Portugal and Brazil (well, I live and was born here) read english but write portuguese. Not useful, guys! Now, thanx for the post and follow this to disable the hotkeys: http://www.technologyquestions.com/technology/windows-xp-tablet-pc-newsgroup/1884-disable-screen-rotation.html

Thanks so much! I had no idea what happened or how to undo it.

Actually, this is a Dell thing, not a Microsoft thing.

Microsoft does not make it particularly easy to change screen orientations unless you have a TabletPC.

António Lopes said...

My wife's computer is not a Dell.

Thanks alot Antonio for your generosity and for being so thoughtful. Your post have been a great help...And no more 90 degree tilted head!!wheeew

Anonymous said...

Thank you so much - have no idea how it rotated - cannot blame either kid, cat or husband - somehow my finger touch a key somewhere - you have saved my sanity, not to mention my neck - who knew it as that difficult to navigate sideways - thanks again - Ninna

Just happened to me. Fortunately it somehow fixed it self after two restarts and a log-in.
Somehow a favorite program of mine (KeePass) managed to send a down arrow while I was trying to press Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Anonymous said...

Thanks man u are awsome

Anonymous said...

I confess I DID IT myself! Most of the posts point a finger at children or cats. I was able to rotate the scree alone. domo Arigato Lopes san

Thank you! Was trying to go back a page in Chrome and must have hit CTRL by mistake. Neat feature. Wish Vista popped up a message the first time a user did it.

THANK YOU! After tilting my head until 5:30 AM trying to find a remedy, with no solution anywhere in Vista "Help" or anywhere else and some on-line "AnswerNow" sopecialist trying to extort me for $36 before he'd help, your advice was a godsend.

Our cat laid on my wife's laptop keyboard last night and did this to it. I went to my identical laptop and searched the built-in Windows help center for a half hour and they don't mention rotating screens at all. I came here and you resolved my problem in 30 seconds! By the way, it is not a Dell function, these are H-P laptops.

Thanks!

Thank you so much.....usual story cat on the keyboard and OMG! Had to get an assignment completed for the next day, so you've saved me going into work on a Sunday!

António Lopes said...

Sorry, mate, don't know. As I said in the post, I'm not a windows vista user. You may want to google for your specific brand of computer and/or windows version.
